Oh, how I love Your law!
It is my meditation all the day.
Psalm 119:97

Blessed is the man
Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,
Nor stands in the path of sinners,
Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;
But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
Psalm 1:1-2

Why memorise scripture?

Do you know that there are many benefits to learning and retaining God's word? God commends anyone who delights in His word and meditates on it. He is always rewarded. He is blessed by it (Psalm 1:2). To meditate upon God's word means to think about it over and over again so that your thinking is in line with His holy word. What wisdom this brings! Remember, as you read the Bible, that it is God who is speaking to you. Here are some other benefits of meditating on God's word:
  • Through God's word you come to know Him (John 17:3, Jeremiah 9:23-24).
  • Through God's word, you come to know what God requires of you (John 3:16, Micah 6:8).
  • Honouring God's command to meditate on His word (Joshua 1:8, Colossians 3:16).
  • It helps you to love the word of God (Psalm 119:16).
  • It prepares and equips you to serve God (2 Timothy 3:16-17).
  • Obedience to God comes through knowledge of His word (1 John 5:3, 1 John 2:4).
  • Through God's word, you can pray in line with the will of God (1 John 5:14).
  • Through His word, God guides you (Psalm 119:105).
  • God's word protects you from sin (Psalm 119:11).
  • Through God's word, you overcome temptation (Matthew 4:11).
  • Through God's word, you will gain necessary wisdom (Proverbs 4:7).
  • God's word will bring you much needed comfort during hard times (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).
  • God's word helps you to persevere in difficult times (James 1:12, Galatians 6:9).
  • You need God's word in order to tell others about Jesus (Mark 16:15, Acts 20:24).
  • Through His word, you will know the wonderful love of God (Ephesians 2:4-5, John 3:16).
Beloved, here are some selected scripture verses for you to commit to memory. Start with the easier ones — the ones for preschoolers. For the longer ones, memorise one section at a time. Practise regularly. Delight in God's word. Pray for God to give you understanding of His word. You may pray the prayer of Psalm 119:18:

Open my eyes, that I may see
Wondrous things from Your law.
Psalm 119:18
